Hello everyone, I’m back! It’s been about six months since I’ve blogged and visited your sites. I’ve missed you all during my vacation and hope to reconnect with my online friends. A lot has happened during my break, especially when I visited my family in the Philippines but all were positive life changes. Now, I’m ready to post all the photos I’ve captured while I was away.
When we travel nowadays, we also incorporate birdwatching into our plans. My main goal was to travel to Bohol, Philippines and hoping we’d catch a glimpse of the uncommon Philippine frogmouth. Luck was on our side when we went to the Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary in Corella, Bohol. The guide was not only knowledgeable about tarsiers but also Philippine birds. He showed us this unusual bird in its nest. Me and hubby could barely contain our excitement.
Looking up, you can easily understand why it’s named frogmouth with its wide beak. The Philippine frogmouth (Batrachostomus septimus) is an uncommon nocturnal and endemic bird of the Philippines. “The population is suspected to be in decline owing to ongoing habitat destruction. Despite the fact that the population trend appears to be decreasing, the decline is not believed to be sufficiently rapid to approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population trend criterion.”~www.birdlife.org
“The nest is built from a horizontal branch that is placed two to five meters above ground. It is made from the parent’s own downy feathers which is held in place using spider silk, moss and lichens. The female lays one egg per season. The male incubates the egg during the day and the female at night.”~en.wikipedia.org
In this side view, it looked like it was smiling when photographed. It definitely was the highlight of my day. 🙂
Thanks for coming by and I will show more species next time. See you!
